Therapy for Adolescents and Young Adults

I work with young people, ages 12–25, as they navigate the challenges of adolescence and early adulthood. Having robust support from an outside party can often be useful for adolescents and young adults in unpacking and making sense of unfamiliar territory or dealing with feeling stuck or confused.

How Can Therapy Help Young Individuals?

Young people can often benefit from having an adult, who they can talk to in confidence and form a safe relationship with. During sessions, I will help them to identify problem areas and learn useful tools to address various challenges.

Together, we will work on issues such as:

General Issues:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sexuality
  • Trauma
  • Substance abuse
  • Self-harm
  • Sexual and gender identity

School-Related Issues:

  • Peer relationships
  • Bullying
  • Procrastination
  • Schoolwork
  • Pressure to succeed
  • Transition to or from college

  • Perfectionism

I provide a non-judgmental environment where young persons do not have to censor themselves or feel pressured to meet expectations. During sessions, they will be able to talk about whatever they are struggling with, from internal and external questions to social and academic endeavors.

Integrative And Creative Therapy

Like adults, teenagers and young adults are individuals with unique needs. They may have trouble speaking up, vocalizing their issues, or identifying what they want to talk about. To help them find their voice, I often integrate their specific interests into therapy. For instance, I may have them bring in some of their favorite music for us to listen to, write poetry together, or watch a tv series they like to discuss during sessions.

Meeting them at their interests helps them feel more at ease and establishes a familiar language to discuss pertinent issues. Once we find a way to open up and talk about issues of concern, we can explore different tools to address them, utilizing skill work such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) if appropriate.

A Message To Parents

Over the years, I have helped many children and adolescents feel better and more effective in their lives. As your child’s therapist, it is my job to put them first and prioritize their well-being. I will nurture a collaborative relationship with your child and provide them with a place to feel safe in a world that can often feel threatening and confusing. I will do my best to keep you broadly informed regarding their treatment without exposing their safe space or divulging private information.
